Prevalence, Plans, and Perceptions: Disability in Family Medicine Residencies

Background and Objectives: Leading medical organizations including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) American Association of Colleges (AAMC) espouse value a diverse physician workforce, disability, yet there is dearth research about this population in graduate education (GME). More information needed on prevalence disability resident population, plans to recruit residents with disabilities, program perceptions barriers inclusion. The goal study was better understand inclusion frequency disability-related complaints litigation. Methods: Surveys were emailed 200 department chairs via SurveyMonkey as part larger omnibus survey conducted by Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA). Results: than 30% family medicine programs reported at least one faculty member while 50% matriculating previous 5 years. Programs greater numbers physicians disabilities more likely have plan inadequate expertise largest perceived barrier Conclusions: Employing may be driving force having an active disabilities.
